Director of Youth Ministries
An established and growing youth ministry is seeking an energetic, faith-filled youth ministry professional to serve as Director of Youth Ministries. Great Bridge United Methodist Church (GBUMC) is a large, suburban congregation located in Chesapeake, Virginia - only 30 minutes from the beach! The youth program currently includes over 100 youth with a regular youth group attendance of over 50 middle and high school students. Our Director of Youth Ministries will lead a strongly relational youth ministry that builds and emphasizes a relationship with Christ, relationships among the youth, and relationships between the youth, parents and other members of GBUMC. The Director should be able to present the needs and issues of teenagers in a theological framework, with a relational focus of ministry that crosses into the daily lives of our teens.
The successful candidate
holds traditional Wesleyan theology values and believes faith is an experience of growth and depth of relationship with Christ in dialogue with scripture, tradition, experience and reason, and often reflected in questions and doubts as a stepping stone to faith.
sees the youth ministry as a means of grace where any youth may come without feeling judged and will mentor all youth along their spiritual journey, regardless of where they are on that journey.
demonstrates experience with developing and mentoring youth as leaders.
demonstrates experience in recruiting, developing and managing a strong volunteer team.
has experience organizing and leading mission trips, local mission experiences and retreats.
demonstrates desire and ability to reach out to youth who are not currently active in the youth ministry, both in the congregation and in the surrounding community.
A bachelor's degree with an emphasis in a field related to youth ministry and certification in youth ministry or a related field is preferred. The ability to work a non-traditional work-week is required. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and the ability to attend overnight youth activities will be expected. Local travel to engage with and support youth in the community and at school events will be a regular part of the work week.
