Primary function of the lead pastor
The pastor of Grace Baptist Church should meet the qualifications of an elder as defined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and in Titus 1: 5-9. He should lead by example, preach/teach/evangelize as the employed, responsible overseer (manager) of all ministry operations of the Grace Baptist congregation.
Overall responsibilities
- Prepare and present God's Word with the goal of sharing the gospel and growing people in a commitment to follow the Lord Jesus Christ (discipleship).
- Pray to the Lord by His Spirit for church ministries (discipleship), the people's needs (physical/spiritual), and evangelism.
- Oversee, shepherd (care for) the people of the congregation and its ministries.
- Serve individuals and families in times of need such as visiting people in the hospital, visit the elderly, the disgruntled, and the wayward.
- Comfort the sorrowing in death or during trials.
- Counsel people for long- and short-term situations. Preside over special services and ceremonies, including weddings, funerals, baptisms, communion.
- Visit new guests, share the gospel, welcome people into the church family.
- Lead other church leaders (elders/deacons/trustees), enlisting them to lead in the facets of ministry that Grace offers with the goal of evangelism and discipleship of our church and community.
Expectations
- Grace Baptist's Pastor should have a strong faith in Jesus Christ that is rooted in God's Word, which his life and messages should reflect. He should have a strong knowledge of and teach the Word of God.
- He should have a love for the Lord, a love for people, and a be a servant-hearted, humble leader. If he has a wife and family, they should also love people and be active members of the congregation.
- He should either be ordained with a degree in biblical studies, or have equivalent knowledge or experience with a willingness to become ordained and to attend seminars or classes to continue to learn and to grow spiritually and in Biblical knowledge.
- He should be hospitable, caring for those inside and outside the church, demonstrated through visitation, counseling, mentoring, teaching, evangelism, prayer, and ministry. He should have a commitment to the church – its congregation, and spiritual and physical growth, creating, developing and overseeing ministries within the church as well as outreach programs in the community.
- He should lead with humility and grace and have good organizational/planning, interpersonal and communication skills, both one-on-one and in preparing and presenting sermons to the congregation.
- He should teach the Word clearly, with outlines for people to follow, He should be willing to preach, teach, and lead Sunday morning and evening services, Wednesday evening prayer meeting, and to assist/oversee children and youth ministries.
- He should ensure that the church policies and constitution are followed and upheld by both church members and leaders. He should have good listening, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
