Director of Youth Ministries
Vision
The Presbyterian Church of Novato (PCN) has a strong commitment to youth and children ministries. Our Christian Education mission statement is to "shepherd children from infancy through adulthood, building the foundations of faith. In doing so, PCN will teach youth to understand and seek God's wisdom from the scripture in a safe and fun learning environment; encourage families so they may grow in relationship with one another and Christ; encourage youth to model their lives after Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit share their faith by serving the world." Our goal is to create an environment in which every student in our programs has at least one consistent, caring, Christian adult in their life.
General Overview
The position requires a high level of energy, committed Christian faith, familiarity with and adherence to the Reformed tradition, and knowledge of the Bible.
Requires a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; desiring to communicate it with a passion to large and small groups of young people and to the congregation.
Ideal candidate will build upon and grow established programs supported by a healthy congregation
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Encourage youth in developing their relationship with God.
Build caring friendships with Middle School and High School students and their families.
Foster and grow the Student Leadership Team.
Connect informally to build relationships with students and adults.
Oversee a weekly Youth Group for Middle School and High School students.
Teach a weekly Middle School and High School Bible study to interested students.
Regularly host outreach pizza lunches onsite at a neighboring Middle School.
Attend and assist with weekly evening Elementary Age program to build relationships with the 4-5th graders and help them transition to the Middle School program.
Hold quarterly outreach/mission opportunities locally for students.
Offer quarterly workshops on parenting/teen issues, etc. or small group opportunities for parents.
Plan, organize, oversee and attend the annual youth mission trip including orchestration of all fundraising events.
Attend camps/conferences that involve our youth.
Participate in Vacation Bible School.
Recruit, equip, train and nurture the Adult Leadership Team of volunteers.
Provide oversight to any interns currently focused on youth ministry, and recruiting when necessary.
Work with pastoral staff to incorporate youth in worship on a more frequent and/or more consistent basis.
Collaborate with children's ministry director to ensure holistic and integrated programs and objectives for students of all ages (birth through high school).
Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly Christian Education meetings, and when requested, Session Meetings.
Participate in weekly worship as requested by the pastoral staff.
Maintain effective and timely communications related to Youth Ministries, including: website updates, social media, newsletter articles, promotional materials, annual report, etc. to parents, volunteers, staff, and congregants.
Other duties as requested by the pastoral staff.
Qualifications
Ideal candidate will have a passion for youth and youth ministry.
Must possess a proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse group of youth, parents, and volunteers.
Must possess a vision for a youth program that deepens the faith of those involved.
Must be able to communicate scripture to both churched and unchurched students.
Is highly relational- a person who develops strong, nurturing connections with students, adult leaders, and families.
A team player who can collaborate with the pastoral staff, ministry leaders, the congregation, and the community at large.
Be aware of resources for developing the youth ministry programming and participate in continuing education events and training opportunities.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, time management skills, and be proficient with a variety of technologies (including, but not limited to, social media).
Be organized and demonstrate initiative and creativity.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and training.
3-5 years of experience in youth ministries preferred.
Musical ability and bilingual in Spanish are desirable but not required.
